This is almost laughable it's so easy.

I debated on whether or not to make this it's own article or not because of how simple the instructions are.

It's the worst to start a recipe only to realize you lack one necessary ingredient. Maybe you thought you had enough but was just short. Inevitably, you have to run to the grocery store in order to complete what you are making.

I try my hardest to avoid those quick trips to the grocery store. Sometimes I miss one ingredient when making my meal plan, or something comes up where I need to make a batch of sugar cookies when I did not plan on it. A few weeks ago I had made some sugar cookies for some friends that were coming over that evening. I needed to make the icing for them, but before I began, I realized I didn't have powdered sugar. For time's sake, I did not want to go to the store, so I began browsing the web to see if there were some icing recipes that did not use powdered sugar. What did I find? A wonderful kitchen secret.

You can make your own powdered sugar!

Really all you need is some regular sugar and a high speed blender. After all the uses I have found for my blender I am so thankful my husband insisted we register for it for our wedding. I thought it would be taking up kitchen space only to be used here or there to make smoothies. Boy, was I wrong!

If you do not have a blender you can also use a coffee grinder for small amounts only.

What You Need

  • Regular Sugar
  • High-Speed Blender

How You Make It

  1. Take the same amount of regular sugar that you need to be powdered sugar. For example, if your recipe calls for 1 cup of powdered sugar, take 1 cup of regular sugar and put it in the blender.
  2. Blend the sugar on a high setting for 1-2 minutes. You may need to pause blending here or there and mix around the sugar. You want to make sure all the sugar is getting blended. Otherwise, you will have a few chunks of grainy powdered sugar. You will begin to notice the sugar looks just like powdered sugar. It's amazing.
  3. (Note: if you are going to use the sugar that day, you do not need to add anything else to it. However, if you want to make larger quantities to use later, you will want to add just a bit of corn starch.)
Put the regular sugar in, turn on your blender, and watch it become powdered sugar.

I hope this saves you a few urgent trips to the grocery store!
